 IPX/SPX in Windows Vista
In computer networking a Media Access Control address (MAC address) is a unique identifier attached to most forms of networking equipment. Most layer 2 network protocols use one of three numbering spaces managed by the IEEE: MAC-48, EUI-48, and EUI-64, which are designed to be globally unique. Not all communications protocols use MAC addresses, and not all protocols which do require such globally unique identifiers. The IEEE claims trademarks on the names "EUI-48" and "EUI-64". (The "EUI" stands for Extended Unique Identifier.)

ARP/RARP is commonly used to map the layer 2 MAC address to an address in a layer 3 protocol such as Internet Protocol (IP). On broadcast networks such as Ethernet the MAC address allows each host to be uniquely identified and allows frames to be marked for specific hosts. It thus forms the basis of most of the layer 2 networking upon which higher OSI Layer protocols are built to produce complex, functioning networks.

IPX/SPX  in Windows Vista. First of all VISTA does not support IPX/SPX.

Vista DOES NOT Support IPX/SPX
That being said, you can try the steps below at YOUR OWN RISK. This only applies to 32-bit Vista. I haven't seen any workarounds for 64-bit Vista.

If you do this, take backups...

Requires: MS Windows XP (SP2) files:

1) Create new folder named 'temp' to root of your Vista drive ( C: ).
Copy the following files from XP (or expand from XP CD) installation:

Windows\System32\drivers\nwlnkipx.sys
Windows\System32\drivers\nwlnkflt.sys
Windows\System32\drivers\nwlnkfwd.sys
Windows\System32\drivers\nwlnknb.sys
Windows\System32\drivers\nwlnkspx.sys

Windows\System32\rtipxmib.dll
Windows\System32\wshisn.dll
Windows\System32\nwprovau.dll

(Following folder is hidden)
Windows\inf\netnwlnk.inf
Windows\inf\netnwlnk.pnf

to C: \ Temp and to corresponding Vista folders.

2) Control Panel->Network Center->Manage network connections.
Right-click your LAN connection and select Properties.

Click Install..., select Protocol and click Add...

The NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS protocol may be listed on the Network Protocol list.  DO NOT SELECT IT.

Click Have Disk... Browse to C:\Temp. Select netnwlnk.inf.
Click OK.
Select NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS from the list.
Vista will tell you that the publisher could not be verified.
Click Install.

If all goes well, the protocol should be now installed.
Restart computer.

Extracting a file from Windows XP CD-ROM

Insert your Windows XP CD-ROM into the drive. Click Start, Run and type CMD.EXE. Use the Expand command. Here are some examples - to expand a file from the CD:

Example 1

expand X:\i386\sysoc.in_ -r c:\windows\inf

Example 2

expand X:\i386\sysoc.in_ c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf

Where X:\ is your CD-ROM drive letter. The above command assumes Windows is installed in C:\ drive. If not, change the drive letter / Path accordingly.
